What is Stress? Causes and cures you should know about!

Stress is the response that occurs when your body is dealing with the outside dangers and challenges life can throw your way or difficult situations known as stressors.

Basically stress is the reaction that your body shows to the challenges of daily life or when you are adjusting to a new situation.

There are two types of stress:

Positive stress and negative stress

Believe it or not, stress can be a positive thing in your life! It can give an extra burst of adrenaline to help you accomplish goals and meet deadlines.
Positive stress also provides mental alertness, motivation, and efficiency and it will increase self-esteem. It can help compel you to action; lead to a new awareness and new exciting prospects.
Negative Stress can lead to health problems such as headaches, insomnia, ulcers, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke and other symptoms as well as emotionally such as depression and it can result in feelings of distrust, rejection, anger, and depression.

What are the causes of stress?


stress at workWhen you are dealing with one challenge after another, it can leave your body in a high state of stress and those chemicals and hormones your body releases to help you deal with challenging situations can actually be harmful in large doses.

As a result, you can experience all sorts of physical, mental, emotional, and behavioral problems. So when something unexpected happens, or you have to do something that is out of ordinary and requires you to get out of your comfort zone you might feel that you are stressed out!

A lot of us forget our ability to breathe deeply and usually use quick, shallow breathing by default, so the deep breathing skill lies dormant in our bodies. Reawakening the slow, deep breathing allows you to tap one of your body’s strongest self-healing mechanisms to heal a lot of problems.

The key to deep breathing is to breathe deeply from the abdomen, getting as much fresh air as possible in your lungs. When you take deep breaths from the abdomen, rather than shallow breaths from your upper chest, you inhale more oxygen.
The more oxygen you get, the less tense, short of breath, and anxious you feel. So the next time you feel stressed, take a minute to slow down and breathe deeply.

How to develop deep breathing technique in 3 easy steps:

Step 1:

Sit comfortably with your back straight or you can lie down if you have hard time breathing from your abdomen while sitting up.

Step 2:

Exhale through your mouth, pushing out as much air as you can while contracting your abdominal muscles.

Step 3:

Continue to breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth. Try to inhale enough so that your lower abdomen rises and falls. Count slowly as you exhale.
Do this exercise for 10-20 minutes every day and you will see how it helps you to become relaxed quickly.

There are a variety of steps you can take to reduce your stress and in particular the stress you find on the job and in the workplace. You need to know that some workplace stress is normal, but excessive stress can interfere with your productivity and impact your physical and emotional health.
